Large sites with lots of content using a content management or e-commerce platform need to understand how to optimize for the major search engines.

When you begin Dynamic Research Project, here are items to consider:

  • URL Structure - How bad is it the dynamic site and url structure?
  • Index Strength - How well is the site indexed in the search engines?
  • Current Rankings - What keywords are you currently driving traffic through?
  • Spider Activity - How often and deep does the spider go?
  • Overcome Issues - Technology, political, or other issues.

What matters?

  • Home page titles really do matter. Most often visited and easiest to change.
  • Embedded keywords into urls are not that important.
  • Add Target Terms to Category pages. Use WordTracker to find Target Terms.
  • CMS tools may be hurting your indexing efforts.
  • Even with Site Search or Google Webmaster, you need to check indexing statistics.

Here are a couple additional thoughts:

  1. Use shopping feeds to get more pages in than with Google Site Maps.
  2. Put 301s in place when you are redesigning your URL’s.
  3. Watch out for accidental duplicate content.
  4. URL Rewrite Engine - Using mod rewrite or a web service to convert the static URLs to dynamic web site calls.
  5. Static Replication - Publish your dynanmic web site into static html on a publishing schedule.
  6. File Extensions do not matter and “?” does not hurt your rankings.
