Are Paid Links Evil? - SES San Jose 2007
What Matt Cutts said -
Acceptable paid links need to have clear disclosure to machines or they are in violation to search ranking guidelines.
Google thinks sites like Adbrite, Quigo, IndustryBrains, etc. that do not pass Page Rank standards aren’t valuable.
PPP = Paid Links Passing page rank. The disclosure of Paid or Paid Advertising in a image format is necessary.
There are several PPP link buying obstacles including ‘run of site’, link seller cloaking, sloppiness on the behalf of the seller, or the ability of a competitor to find your ads.
Google tackles paid links through algorithms and human detection. Google is willing to take strong action against PPP links and Google is focusing on doing so. Google is detecting PPP links very successfully through its algorithm.

“Google is not the government”.
He also added that Matt Cutts saying “Don’t Buy Links” is like McDonalds saying “Don’t Buy A Whopper”. Basically, Michael Grey attacked Google on a number of fronts using the logic that Google is a for profit and by eliminating paid link advertising, this will create more revenue for its advertising platform.

A little more on the link issues, all links have a cost and a relative value. Trying to say that paid links are bad is hard to monitor when every link has value.
In addition, the algorithm created the micro economy and Google Page Rank makes it really easy to show the value. Someone should benefit from this marketplace, and consumers like it..marketers love it and paid advertising is actually more relevant.
Is Paid Links a real competitor to Google. If they were really bad, why does Google allow advertisers to spend money on these keywords making advertising money?
